Promoting issue-based advocacy
A number of veteran’s organizations were seeking to promote issue-based advocacy to support the passage of legislation to aid veterans and their families.
Objective
Increase awareness and support for pending legislation that Congress was reviewing and debating before a vote.
Congress was reviewing potential legislation that would support veterans and their families who were enlisted during specific years. The legislation was not receiving a lot of attention, and a number of veteran’s organizations were working to bring awareness to the legislation and the issue at hand. They engaged ERPR to help raise awareness within the media landscape, to both generate support from the veteran community as well as raise awareness within local regions and districts where Congressional support would be vital for the legislation’s passing.
Strategy
With such a personal and important issue at stake, ERPR developed a media strategy that leveraged personal stories to generate awareness within key communities. We engaged with veterans across the country to help them share their individual stories, and worked closely with legislators supportive of the bill to share the importance of the legislation and why passage was necessary.
We designed a campaign that focused on both local and national outlets, with the intent of generating both community support and fueling national discussion of the issue. With so many impacted by the pending legislation, we engaged with veterans and their family members to share their unique stories.
Results
Over the course of three months, ERPR secured media coverage across the country, which aided in the ultimate passage of the legislation and brough much needed support to the veteran community. Coverage of the issue was featured in a number of media outlets.
