Questionnaire for Media: Beverly Chandler, ETF Express
ERPR’s series, “Questionnaire for Media,” features members of the media and asks about their lives and careers.
I connected with Beverly Chandler, managing editor of ETF Express, which provides daily news and comment and analysis regarding the Exchange-traded funds industry.
How did you first get into journalism? What was your first job in journalism?
My first job in journalism remains the most glamorous job that I have ever had. I was recruited from being a researcher in the Business History Unit at the London School of Economics to being a business researcher and junior reporter on the heavy, glossy magazine Business, a joint venture between Conde Nast and The Financial Times. I got The Financial Times training – at Bracken House - and the joy of working in a beautifully designed large office in Chelsea that we shared with World of Interiors. The reception area was usually full of the most beautiful objects, such as hand painted porcelain lavatories, waiting to be photographed. Having those two firms supporting the publication gave us, even at my very junior level, extraordinary access to the great and the good (and the not so good) at the time.
How do you decide what you write or publish?
Now I work entirely in the digital world, I use my gut instinct to pick up trends as quickly as possible. Currently my days are dominated by ESG and cryptocurrencies.
What is the most interesting news story you’re following right now that you’re not covering?
At this very moment, I have backed off cryptocurrencies, mostly to take a bit of a breather, but I am quite sure they will reassert themselves soon.
If you weren’t in journalism, what would you be doing?
Gardening and cooking.
What do you read or watch every morning?
The Today Programme, if listening counts, and every morning I always read The Guardian and The Financial Times through their apps.
Where would you most like to live?
My home – the Isle of Wight.
What is your greatest extravagance?
My dog!
